Love tokens reached their peak popularity during the Victorian era but are believed to have originated somewhere in Great Britain during the 1500’s. Often Love Tokens were exchanged between sweethearts as “tokens of love” or even marriage proposals. Love Tokens are generally defined as monetary coins from which one side (or sometimes both sides) have been smoothed down flat and engraved with names, phrases, monograms, and sometimes even pictorials.
